Europa League 09/10: Roma denied Fulham the win and round-up

Roma denied ten-man Fulham a famous win with Marco Andreolli’s last-gasp goal earning the Italians a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage.

Andreolli scored with almost the final kick of the game as he powered home a shot from inside the box off the underside of the crossbar to break Fulham’s hearts.

Fulham looked to be heading for a famous win when Brede Hangeland put them in front after 24 minutes as he rose highest to head home Bjorn Helge Riise’s corner.

But the Cottagers were reduced to ten men 14 minutes from time when Stephen Kelly brought down John Arne Riise in the box to concede a penalty.

Everton slumped to a disappointing 5-0 defeat to Europa League rivals Benfica in the Estadio da Luz.

David Moyes made a number of changes to his side, with 11 players unavailable for the Group I match, and his new-look team were played off the park by an impressive Benfica outfit.

He gave a debut to Irish left-back Seamus Coleman in the absence of Leighton Baines, and the youngster was beaten at the back post for the first goal on 14 minutes as Javier Saviola volleyed a Angel Di Maria cross past Tim Howard.

It stayed that way until the break, but Benfica came out firing in the second half and Oscar Cardozo hit two goals in two minutes immediately after the restart.

Joao Moutinho scored a stunning winner five minutes from time to give Sporting Lisbon a 2-1 win against FK Ventspils.

Moutinho’s late strike sealed a third straight win in Group D of the Europa League for Sporting, at the expense of a brave Ventspils outfit. Meanwhile, Hernan Losada’s first-half goal was enough to earn Heerenveen a first victory against Hertha Berlin in the group, in a clash which saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

Lille recorded an emphatic 3-0 win over Genoa to make their mark at the top of Group B.

Tommaso Rocchi’s last-gasp goal earned ten-man Lazio a 2-1 win over Villarreal in Group G, Red Bull Salzburg maintained their 100 per cent record.

Lazio piled the misery on struggling Villarreal with a dramatic late win at the Stadio Olimpico.
